I can’t help thinking of today. I know that normally my mind would be set on tomorrow or next week when my bills are due.. But right now I can only think of today.
I want to talk about something that maybe I’m just a bit too underqualified to talk about. I’m not a Bible scholar. I’m not a pastor or scientist or phycologist. But God is a big subject to talk about. Faith itself is a big subject to talk about. You can write books upon books and still have room to write more. And people have and still do.
I want to talk about faith, and I want to talk about the law. Gods law is spoken about a lot in the Bible. You find it mostly in the Old Testament and then you hear more about a kind of new law because of faith. And because of what Jesus did. Not that the old law was abolished.. But that it was made more complete.
I’ve heard so many stories of people being told that because (insert bad situation here) is happening to you, Gods punishing you. So you must be living a terrible, terrible life. That’s not true. And other stories like, you have to fast and pray this often, and give this much money and do this and this, otherwise, you won’t be saved. That’s not true either.
“Well they did all this in the Bible.” Yes, they did. And even more severe things would they do in order to keep in good standing with God but what do you think the reason was for sending Jesus to die for us? Before Jesus came and saved us.. All those things mentioned in the Bible were necessary because, well there was no remedy yet.
But once Jesus came everything was put back in place. There was a place for every Jew and every Gentile. There wasn’t such a struggle anymore to be with God.
People worked as righteous people trying to become more righteous by helping themselves and forgetting all about the love that was intended from the beginning. Now we help ourselves by having faith and helping others have faith.
It’s not about having the most money. It’s not about fasting the longest or praying the hardest. It’s not about who has the least amount of sin.. Because who could really count them to know? Who can even look at a person and judge them for what they’ve done or are doing? No one can. If we could then the law would still be more active today.
It’s not about how generous you are. But more about giving your all in everything you do. Giving all that you have. Sacrificing for someone else even if it leaves you short. It’s not about keeping score.
And so we have Jesus. Who wanted us to be apart of a bigger picture. And because of this we have right standing with God, through faith.
“So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” This way of faith is very different from the way of law, which says, “It is through obeying the law that a person has life.””Galatians 3:11-12 NLT
Can you imagine that? It is through obeying the law that a person has life. So as imperfect as we are I can only imagine how hard people must have worked for Gods love.. But isn’t it amazing that God doesn’t require us to live that way anymore? Because now the Gospel is open to everyone. You don’t have to work for it. You just need to believe and receive it.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
